July 2013 Community Events

flip flops summer July Saturdays. Watervalley Public Library Kids Korner. The Library will continue its Summer Fun at the Library activities every Saturday morning starting at 10:00. There will be games, storytelling, and a scavenger hunt. Eight through fourteen year olds welcome. Snacks will be provided. (Parents, please, no chewing gum or cell phones.)

July 4. Fireworks Display at Watervalley Lake. Due to the ban on fireworks because of the drought, citizens will be able to shoot fireworks starting at 6:00 PM down at the far end of Watervalley Lake. Director of Public Works, Ed Caswell, noted that the official fireworks will start at promptly at 9:00. Bring a picnic and enjoy the show! (Please, no swimming or fishing in the lake will be allowed during the celebration.)

July 9. Meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA). This month’s agenda includes a discussion regarding raising chickens within city limits, a discussion about altering the statue of the Grateful Farmer on the lawn of the courthouse square, (when viewed from behind, the positions of his hands look like he is peeing,) and a final update regarding the renovation of the Watervalley Lake Bandstand.

July 10. The Society Book Club Meeting.  This month the SBC will be reviewing Patrick Taylor’s wonderful new book An Irish Country Wedding. The meeting will be held at the home of Polly Pigg. Polly will also be presenting a slide show of her recent trip to Ireland and a discussion about her visit to Waterford. (Whoppee-doo!)

July 13. Watervalley Line Dance and Bingo Club. The monthly gathering of the LD&BC will be at the Memorial Building starting at 6:30. Because of the overwhelming response to the Center Stage Dance Academy and Gymnastics summer recital, this month the LD&BC is branching out from traditional line dancing and will be featuring a DJ so that some of the older members can demonstrate their version of the Carolina Shag, the Lindy Hop, and the Rumba. Come on out and learn a new step… or a new “old” step that is.

July 15. DAR Meeting. The Bi-Monthly meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be meeting in the home Lonsdale Baker in order to plan for the Fall DAR Dance and Soiree.

July 21. Chicks with Sticks Knitting Club. The CSKC will meet at 10:00 in the conference room of the Watervalley Library. This month Mary Jane Caruthers will be providing an instructive demonstration of how to knit a decorative cover for a brick. (To be used as a doorstop. Yeah, that one didn’t make sense to us at first, either.)

July 29. First Day of School. The late summer session will begin with all bus routes running a complete schedule. (Have fun while you can, kids.)
